“They Performed What They Promised” is a 45–50 minute open-air performance loosely based on the myth of Iphis and Ianthe. The title references the line: “Iphis performed as a boy what he promised as a girl,” linking the myth to performative expectations explored in stripping and classical music.
The performance places Iphis and Ianthe in a hybrid space between brides, pole dancing, Pergolesi, loops, a strip club, and the figure of the sleeping hermaphrodite. Through direct interaction with the audience, gazes and expectations are negotiated, fulfilled, or disrupted.
Supported by GGG Kulturkick, the piece was developed from movement and sound research under the working title strip4string, investigating connections and tensions between stripping and classical music.
